Why Do We Wear Makeup?

With a form of self expression so personal as one’s makeup, It’s funny that the only thing onlookers seem to be wondering about is what everyone else is going to think. Sure, it’s only right for strangers to be curious, especially those that don’t understand makeup. Not the way we do, anyway. Sometimes, our on-trend looks may seem off to others, but that doesn’t mean we asked for your opinion.

Sometimes people can have a stronger influence on us than we’d care to admit. The need to fit in to a group can override our creative process and, more importantly, our self-discovery as beauty-conscious individuals.

Is pleasing your loved ones a bad thing? Of course not. Often those near to us can help us understand our own qualities and tastes. But are we painting ourselves to please them? What if they weren’t happy with the way we chose to present ourselves? Would it affect us? Would we change for them?

No matter what, you're never going to satisfy everyone out there. You will go mad trying. All that matters is that you like what you wear and how you look. I mean, This is my makeup. Where exactly does anyone else fit into the picture?

For those of us who understand the power and magic of cosmetics, makeup is an art. It is our our skill. Makeup is our paint, our daily celebration, our self exploration. It is a reflection of our mood, our day, and most importantly, ourselves. Our faces serve as a canvas that not only satisfies our urge to look and feel our best, it fills our need to create.

I'm sure we all have people saying to us, "You don't need to wear makeup. You look fine without it." That's not the point. I wear makeup as self expression. I wear makeup for fun. I wear makeup as an adventure. To me, makeup is awesome!

I just wish more people could understand that, and not judge based on their lack of knowledge and insight about makeup. People tend to think we dont love ourselves or we think we're ugly so we wear makeup. But I think I am beautiful and makeup enhances my features.

We're expected to wear our makeup looking like we're not wearing any, or what we call The "natural" look. But still, that ain't my face, if it were, why would I put the make up on? No one paints a canvas white, right?

It's a nasty cycle, we're taught to feel ugly (magazines, ads, celebrities) so we "beautify" with make up. But then we're told we're ugly for hiding behind make up.

I love to see people who are bold enough to look drastically different than what the mainstream has deemed acceptable. Life is sooooo short. If you live to be 80 years old you'll only get 80 Halloweens. Does that mean you should go without expressing yourself the other 29,200 days of your life?

Who do we wear makeup for? We wear it for us.
Why do we wear makeup? Because we want to.

Halloween: Tiger

Halloween: Tiger
I've been wanting to create this one for months! I only got about half an hour to make this and clean it off because I had to go somewhere, so it's not the best, but I think it's pretty good :)

I used face paint for this look, the usual Snazaroo face painting kit that I got in Paper Clip at Pondok Indah mall.

Hada Labo Launching Jakarta

Hada Labo Launching Jakarta
Last Wednesday, on 12th September, I attended the Hada Labo launching event on Poke Sushi Crowne Plaza Hotel. Now if you're a makeup fan like I am, you would know what Hada Labo is.
For those who doesn't, Hada Labo is a Japanese skincare produced by Rohto Pharmaceutical company. Yes, the eye drops.

Hada Labo was invented in Japan on 2004. Since then, the product keeps getting great response. And finally, they brought it here. I've heard the rave about this product months ago. I was looking for a product to reduce skin dullness, and then came Hada Labo at the top of the list.

I've tried a whitening product, and it works, my face does turn white. And that's absolutely not what I want. I want my skin, especially my face, to look brighten, not lighten, if that make sense. I didn't want to change my skin color to match a lighter foundation, I just wanted it to look healthy and glowy. And it is sooooo friggin' hard to find that kind of product. Everything is about whitening, not brightening.

So I bought it online, the sample size, because it's so expensive. At that time I had no idea that Hada Labo was planning to launch in Indonesia, meaning they will have their own factory here, meaning the price will be much cheaper.

Anyway, I got the Shirojyun (I can never say it right, ever) lotion. It says Ultimate Whitening, but I've read people's review on the product, and they describe it as if you have a lamp on your face. Exactly what I wanted. I use it as recommended, 2-3 drops 2 times a day. And it works wonder, especially a minute after you put it on. I just love it.

So I was excited when I got the invitation from IBB (Indonesian Beauty Blogger), because I actually use and like the product. I met the founder / creator of Hada Labo, Mr. Tsunetsugu Shuici. He tells us all about Hada Labo, and it made me feel even more sure that this is a great product.

There are also Mr. Furuya Akiyoshi, Vice President Rohto Laboratories Indonesia, Mr. Mukdaya Massidy, President Director Rohto Laboratories Indonesia, and Mrs. Trusti Dwijaya, Hada Labo user.

And of course, the goody bag!!
It contains all the Hada Labo range that are already produced in Indonesia. There are whitening, moisturizing, and anti-aging series. Choose the one suits you best.

I think I'm safe for about two years. That is a loooot of product because you're only using a tiny amount each time.

There was a skin-test booth, a product test booth, it's a very informative and fun event, thanks IBB and Hada Labo for having me!

For more information, check out Hada Labo website: http://www.hadalabo.com.my/en/index.html

I highly recommend this product!

Halloween: Melted Face

Halloween: Melted Face
Aaaand another Halloween inspired. I made this out of dried glue, stick them all over the face using lash glue, and apply foundation and Vaseline petroleum jelly or clear lipgloss or anything greasy to create the gross look. It's actually pretty simple. I like this one :D

All You Need To Know About Sunblock / Sunscreen

Many of us think that the sun is a beautiful thing. They're not wrong. Its bright, natural light makes us feel warm and everything. And nothing beats a beautiful sunset. But I'm not going to talk about the benefits of the sun here. I'm going to tell you what it can do to your skin, and not in a good way.

What does the sun spreads?

The sun basically have 3 types of UV (Ultra Violet) rays: UV A, UV B, and UV C.

The UV C is probably the most unheard of, because it didn't even make it through the ozone layer of our planet, so we can forget about that.

The UV A is responsible for aging and wrinkles on your skin. It penetrates deeper into your skin compared to the other rays, making it takes longer to be noticeable. Aging and wrinkles wouldn't appear overnight, right? This one also causes long term skin damage, and worst of all, skin cancer. I would say UV A is the most dangerous.

The UV B is responsible for redness and burns on the skin. It penetrates usually only on the outer layer of the skin. Causing the quickly noticeable redness and darker skin after you're going outside for a while.

I try to remember the difference between the UV A and UV B by referring the A = Aging, and B = Burns.

What's the difference between sunblock and sunscreen?

Yes, they are different. But they both works to prevent the UV lights from entering your skin.
Sunblock works by reflecting the UV lights, exactly like a mirror.
Sunscreen works by absorbing the UV lights so it cannot enter your skin.

If you have a more sensitive skin, I would suggest to use sunblock rather than the sunscreen, because the ingredients are more suitable for sensitive skin.

Another reason why sunblock is preferable, is that it works faster than sunscreen. If you're using sunscreen, you have to wear it about 15-30 minutes before you go out. But sunblock works immediately after you put it on.

What is SPF and what does the numbers means?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. I'm sure the name explain itself, so what I'm going to explain is the numbers that are often written (SPF 15, SPF 30, etc.)

Let's say I'm using a sunblock with SPF 15. This means that I can stay out in the sun 15 times longer than I can without using sunblock before I start to burn or turning red. So if I usually burn after 10 minutes in the sun, with the SPF 15 I can stay for 10x15=150 minutes before I get darker.

Keep in mind that these numbers does not multiply. If you're using SPF 30, it doesn't mean that you get twice protection of SPF 15. So it's always better to use the medium range, depending on your exposure to the sun. The suggested amount is between 15-30 of SPF protection for daily use.

Now to the part where it gets messed up.
We all heard about SPF, but what we may not know is that SPF only works for UV B. So it does nothing to prevent aging and the long term skin damage. When I first found out about this I was like "Are you frickin' kidding me???!!"

But there is always something we can do. Read the ingredients written on the packaging, and look for: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Oxybenzone (benzophenone, benzophenone-3), or Ecamsule (Mexoryl SX). If you find at least one of those, you're good to go. Those are the best ingredients to protect your skin from UV A light.

Another thing that could come in handy, is to know the term Broad Spectrum. If you find this written on the packaging, you are safe. Broad Spectrum means that the product contains both UV A and UV B filters. No need to look for those confusing ingredients.

What can you learn from this post?

- Do not underestimate the sun. Ever.
- Use sunblock / sunscreen that contains both UV A and UV B filters.
- Use it every single day before you go out in the sun.

Hope it helps!

Halloween: Diablo, Split Personalities, and Walking Dead

Halloween: Diablo, Split Personalities, and Walking Dead
Still in the Halloween spirit, which does not make sense because it's August and we don't really celebrate Halloween here, but well....

I created two more creatures as you can see, and I love both of it!

Diablo

Split Personalities

I actually created one that was inspired by The Walking Dead, which is a movie series about Zombies taking over the world. Couldn't get enough sleep when I first watched it because it's creepy, but I can't stop watching. I love it!

So here it is, my Zombie inspired look.

Sleek Pout Paint

Sleek Pout Paint
The Sleek Pout Paint is a lip color that is SUPER SUPER REALLY FREAKISHLY pigmented. You only need the tiniest amount to color the whole lip. That's why many people are in love with them. It comes in 11 beautiful colors, and meant to be mixed to create your own color, but some of them are great to use on their own. I got 2 of them, in the color Minx and Pin up.

Minx is a soft nude pink. It's great for lighter skin tone. I use this in the tiniest possible amount to create a nude lip.
Pin up is a vibrant red. I'm sure it works for any skin tone. You can build the color by applying more layer if you want a darker red. It is a very versatile product, I even use this one as fake blood for face painting.

To use this, you'll need a lip brush, you don't want to apply this with your fingers, because it will create a mess. Take the product in a tiny dot and then apply it all over your lip. You'll be amazed by the pigmentation. It's crazy.

You can see on the left of each color I take a tiny amount of product and the right one are the same amount blended. One tube of this pout paint will last a lifetime, because a little goes a long way!

Hope it helps!

NYX Slim Lip Pencil

NYX Slim Lip Pencil
The NYX Slim Lip Pencil come in 60 shades. So it took me quite some time to choose the ones I want. Finally I bought 4 of them. They're soft, and glides easily on the lips, unlike other lip pencil I tried, which is from The Body Shop. It's too dry and hard to apply. But it may work wonders on other people. Different person can have different results. This NYX lip pencil also great as a base, to prevent the lipstick from feathering or smudging all over. So the colors are:

Nude beige is a soft brown, works for most skin types. Works best to even out the lip color. I love this one so much :)

Natural is a soft pink, it's not too pale so you can use it on its own. Maybe apply some lip balm before or after to prevent dryness.

Rose is a bright pale pink (does that make sense?). Well it's a bright pink, but kinda washed so it doesn't look too doll-like or too bright. Looks beautiful on the lips. May works best for lighter skin tone to use on its own, but it's great to even out the lip or as a base.

Hot red is a beautiful neutral red, works for all skin tones. Red lip liner is very very important when you're trying to wear red lipstick. Because if you're brave enough to wear red lips, you don't want it to wear off. So it's important to apply lip liner all over the lips to create a base, and prevent the red lipstick you put on top of it to wear off or smudge all over. It also helps the color to stay longer.

Lip liners are useful not only to make your lips look fuller by lining all over the lips, (sometimes outside the actual lip line if your lips are really small/thin) but also as a base by coloring the whole lips with it so your lipstick can have something to hold on to, so it stays longer.

Here's some swatches to help you choose:

elf Studio 11 Piece Brush Collection Set

elf Studio 11 Piece Brush Collection Set
Like I said on my previous post about elf studio brushes, I'm getting the brush set. And I am loving it! These brushes are unbelievable! They're super soft, sleek design which is all black, and also very sturdy.

The set contains 11 brushes, all synthetic. Some of them I already bought separately, but I don't mind having 2, it is that great.

box

case

inside. with a little manual book on how to use each brushes

The 11 brushes are:

Complexion brush: Big fluffy brush to apply powders, blushes, or bronzers all over the  face.
complexion brush

Powder brush: Flat top brush to apply powder, blushes, bronzers, or contour. Some people love to use this to apply cream or liquid foundations.
powder brush

Angled foundation brush: The angle makes it easy to apply foundation in hard-to-reach places, like under the eyes and around the nose.
angled foundation brush

Fan brush: I never like this type of brush, I kinda think it's useless. Except if it's thicker. This one is too thin so I can't figure out a way to use this for anything. It was meant to be used to wipe away any eyeshadow fallout under the eyes, but I think it's too thin to be able to do that.
fan brush

Blush brush: To apply blushes, bronzers, or powders. But I use this a lot to set the concealer with powder under the eyes. It works wonderful. The size is perfect for that.

Concealer brush: To apply concealer, primer, or eyeshadow. I use this to apply eyeshadow only. Love it.
concealer brush

Contour brush: Domed small brush for applying eyeshadow to add more depth on the crease. Also to blend the eyeshadow.
contour brush

Eyeshadow "C" brush: To apply eyeshadow on the outer corner of the eyes. Perfect if you want to create a smokey eyes. It can be used to blend also.
eyeshadow "c" brush

Small precision brush: To apply concealer on specific areas, to apply lipsticks, lipglosses, eyeliners, or to create definition under the eyes. Definitely a must-have.
small precision brush

Small smudge brush: To smudge eyeliner or eyeshadow for a smokey eye look. It's a bit smaller and thinner than the precision brush, that's why it's perfect for blending eyeliner.
small smudge brush

Small angled brush: Every women need at least one of these. It helps create an even, thin, and straight lines. It can be used to apply eyeliner if you want to get a cat-eye or a flick, which most of us struggle with, and of course to color the eyebrows. Try to find the thinnest one available for this type of brush. The thinner the better.

You can get each one of these brushes separately, the set is just a cheaper way to buy. I highly recommend this product, especially if you're a beginner or on a budget.

Real Techniques Brushes

Real Techniques Brushes
Today I'm going to review the Real Techniques brushes by Samantha Chapman from Pixiwoo, which is practically why I am into makeup in the first place. I saw their video months ago on Youtube, and I love it so much I decided to watch every single video they uploaded. The Pixiwoo channel on Youtube is a collaboration of the Pixiwoo sisters, which is Samantha and Nicola Chapman. They're both super talented. You guys should definitely check them out.

Not very long ago (I guess), Samantha (Sam) launch her own brush line, called Real Techniques. Made with ultra smooth taklon bristles which is synthetic, meaning you can use these brushes for cream and powder. The brushes were instantly getting much love from everyone, so I decided I'm gonna get one.

The first one I got was the stippling brush. Oh one thing I should mention, they're color coded. So the orange ones were meant to be used for the face, like foundation and powder. The pink ones are for the cheeks, and the purple ones are for the eyes. Genius. But it's not like they're carved in stones, you can always use them on your own preference.

stippling brush

The stippling brush meant to be used for blushes, but I see the Pixiwoo sisters use it a lot to apply foundation. So I use them for both. This brush helps you to get a flawless finish, by stippling it on the face, dabbing the product so it blends well with the skin and didn't look like you're piling on makeup. I really love the stippling brush, and I think this is one of the most wanted brush of all the Real Techniques collection. I can see why.

After being in love with the stippling brush for a couple of months, I decided I want to get another one. So I went for the core collection.

The set contains 4 brushes to help you achieve flawless base. Description of each brushes are on the back of the box which is really helpful.

Buffing brush: To apply foundation. Cream, liquid, powder, or any kind of foundation. Buff the product into the skin, so it blends well. We never want a streaky foundation.

Detailer brush: Tiny little brush to conceal spots, or to apply lipstick. I love to use this to apply eyeshadow under the eyes. Whichever you prefer.
detailer brush

Pointed foundation brush: To build custom coverage of foundation on some areas. If you need more coverage around the lips, which usually a bit red for many people, use this brush. It's also great to apply concealer under the eyes to hide dark circles.
pointed foundation brush

Contour brush: This one is probably my favorite. The size and shape is perrrrfect for contouring.
contour brush
The core collection set comes with a black panoramic case that I love, because it can also stand up. I use it upside down, though, to dry the brushes after I washed it. I got asked this question a lot, how do you clean your brushes? The best way is to use baby shampoo or other delicate shampoo. Wash it with the handle upside down, so you don't get any water on the inside of the handle, because it can damage the glue that stick the hair and the handle, eventually makes it comes off. So only wash the tip of the brush. And let them dry on their own, upside down, and never use a hair dryer or so.

I really really love these brushes, they're super soft and did their job amazingly well for an affordable price. Check the Real Techniques website on www.realtechniques.com for more info. Hope it helps!
